What each role actually does
Driver - the only role you assign to a specific service. A service cannot run without one. Experienced drivers recover from delays faster than new hires.
Conductor/Guard - not assigned individually. Recovers fare revenue that driver-only operation misses (on-board checking and selling). Up to +8% revenue, scaled to how many services you run.
Control room - not assigned individually. Reduces how badly delays hit once something goes wrong, by re-planning around it. Up to 25% less delay, scaled to services running.
Depot/maintenance staff - not assigned individually. Reduces how often fleet faults happen at all, by catching problems early. Up to 30% fewer faults, scaled to fleet size.
Only drivers are rostered to individual services - the other three work across your whole operation, so you hire to a level that matches its size rather than assigning them one by one. All three have diminishing returns past that point.
